A good friend of mine, Claudio Izzi, started up a website dedicated to helping you learn how to use unix shells without worrying about blowing up your computer. The OS is Debian Linux, you are given 50 megs of space, and you can do things like learn how to use a text-based Unix/Linux environment, compile programs, etc. Did I mention it’s free?
