I used to use StatCounter on here, but switched over to Site Meter about 8 months ago because SCs servers used to run unimaginably slow for me. I’ve been trying it once again on and off for several months now (usually for only a few hours) - and I’ve finally decided to completely switch back over to StatCounter. I guess their servers are *finally* getting a bit better.
The reasoning behind this move is simple:
1. Privacy Concerns - A few months back StatCounter said they were approached by some iffy spammy advertisers that wanted user data - they said no. I suspect Site Meter said yes. In a nutshell - every time you load a page with Site Meter on it your browser also loads a script from a completely different service. A privacy disaster waiting to happen. The ONLY reason I kept it on is because StatCounter loaded super slow at the time, and I like to use at least two counters to get a more accurate picture of traffic growth.
2. Multiple Sites - It was a royal pain in the ass to check multiple counters on Site Meter. You have to open up a new account for each site and load them each separately… ick. StatCounter (and even Google Analytics) lets you put multiple sites under one account - why Site Meter doesn’t do that completely eludes me.
So Is Site Meter a bad counter? Not really - but there are many better alternatives out there. The only reason I chose to use them is because, like I said above, StatCounter used to run slow as heck; but now it is much faster and I look forward to using it once again.
Hopefully this is the last time I will have to switch counters. It is unbelievably depressing to log in and see this:

Please subscribe, or else I will cry. Do you really want to make a programmer cry?

I have only used StatCounter and never had any problems with it. Perhaps I didn’t know the difference between a slow-loading and a fast-loading browser. Or maybe I wasn’t observant enough to know that my blog loaded slowly due to StatCounter
Ignorance is bliss.

Heh, some people were lucky and always got good speeds- but mine would often not load or load extremely slowly. Looks like they’ve gotten the bugs worked out though - and so far it is working extremely well (and it is no longer saying 0 hits - thank god!)
