Google Reader Now Displays Subscription Numbers - Very Inaccurate

I just popped up DailyBlogTips and noticed an article about Google reader now displaying subscription numbers (only Google reader subscribers - not total) next to each feed on the “add a feed” page. All I have to say is holy shit, talk about inaccurate.

Google Reader Subscription Numbers

I’d like to know a few things. Why does it show my blog 4 times in the screenshot, and why are the numbers (even when added together) much different from the actual Google Reader subscription numbers (as reported by FeedBurner)?

Apprently I’m not the only one experiencing problems with it. ContestBlogger left a comment on DailyBlogTips:

I have like 350 subscribers, but Google Reader says I only have 10. What the heck, dude?

Update: Apparently this is ONLY Google reader numbers, it doesn’t include the numbers for other Google services, which explains why the number is so far off.

Update X2: Google Reader now says Nusuni Dot Com’s feed has more subscribers - but it still shows the feed 4 times.

Please subscribe, or else I will cry. Do you really want to make a programmer cry?

    Google Reader subscriber stats #1: a roundup…

Google Reader recently began to show the number of subscribers for each feed in the result list when you search for a new feed. (Ionut Alex Chitu on Friday, Oct. 12) On Sunday, TechCrunch published …

The first 2 are easy to explain: with and without trailing “/”. See my roundup post for a link to someone who points out why that’s a feature not a bug. However, the overlap in the last 3 looks like a bug (different title and/or description) … also part of my roundup.

My subsequent posts covered Mashable’s critique, added an interactive “long tail” chart plus a first draft chart of Technorati vs. Google Reader data.

Yeah, I think it was Andy Beard who also also said the / was probably causing it. I’ve since fixed the little bug I had in my subscription code, so now it all includes the /
