The other day while at the mall I realized something that is vitally important to the definition of our culture. Most people won’t take that extra second out of their life to help someone other than their self.
Have you ever held a door open for someone? It seems like most people don’t. While I was drinking a smoothie at the mall (it was so good on a nasty hot day
) I counted the number of times I saw someone hold a door open. Out of the 40 or so people who I saw enter/exit in a few minutes, only 2 held the door open for someone else. That is a pathetic number.
I always hold the door open for other people, it isn’t that hard to do. All you have to do is take 1 second out of your life to hold it, that is all. It makes you feel better and it makes many other people (whether or not they say “thank you”) feel better too.
Apparently most people are either incredibly rude or they have a false belief that 1 second of their life to do a good deed is going to kill them.
What is even more disgusting is when people stand there looking at you when you have both hands full of bags and no one helps by opening the door.
They are exactly the same way on the Internet.
Just go on forums and chat rooms and you’ll see what I am talking about. For every one person that will take a second out of their life to help someone else, there are 50 who won’t.
This is why I love blogging. You can take several seconds out of your day to write posts that will hopefully help many people in the long run. At least good bloggers do that, there are others who do nothing but bitch and moan about everything (like political bloggers
).
Please subscribe, or else I will cry. Do you really want to make a programmer cry?

Hey, great article. Just found your website and was totally impressed. It’s funny because today, I was on the subway and I decided to get up so an old lady could sit. She smiled so wide it made my day that much better.
Great reminder.
Cheers!
