I have already written two other articles about page titles: Writing Better Page Titles and Why Page Titles are Important, but I never talked about what a title actually is.
Page titles can be defined in two simple ways: they are the text in between <title> and </title>, and page titles are a summary of your page. More specifically: titles are used for anchor links, and they are what catch your readers’ attention.
When trying to think up a page title I go through a simple 5-step process:
- What is the page about?
- Who is my target audience?
- Should this page be linkable?
- Which keywords?
- and… If I was reading this would I get pulled in?
That system is pretty foolproof, and it really helps when I’m can’t think up a good title, but more importantly it defines what a page title is. It is something that can really help give your page that extra boost, and it isn’t something that should be underrated or ignored.
Please subscribe, or else I will cry. Do you really want to make a programmer cry?
