A Week-Long Experiment

Over the past few weeks it seems like my comments on some blogs are getting longer and longer (paragraphs long). I think for the heck of it for an entire week, if a comment I leave is going to be longer than a couple of paragraphs I’ll just write up a post on here and use a trackback.

It’ll be interesting to see what comes out of it.

But heck, can’t get anywhere unless we experiment, right?

At the end of the week I’ll release some figures showing the effect on nusuni.com’s traffic and if the traffic change was due to the trackbacks.

Please subscribe, or else I will cry. Do you really want to make a programmer cry?

I think this is generally accepted as proper form. I usually skim over or skip altogether long comments on other people’s blogs. If you can make an interesting post out of it, I see nothing wrong with adding the content to your own blog and providing a trackback. I would personally rather get a trackback on my own blog anyhow, as it brings in more traffic.

On the other hand, I can see why some (larger) blogs would prefer to keep the conversation local if they can. Better conversation encourages more comments which lead to more audience-targeted posts which lead to better conversation etc. I think either way, the blogger will just be happy that you’re responding, and crediting them in your post should appease them.

I also just wanted to make this post a couple of paragraphs because I thrive on irony.

Haha, a nice long comment :P

Really the only reason I’m doing this is because the “comment vs trackback for traffic” debate is one of those annoying debates that will last forever unless someone comes out with some good evidence that goes one way or the other.

By the way, I just changed “longer than a paragraph” to “longer than a couple of paragraphs”, I didn’t literally mean a paragraph, as a paragraph could be as short as:

    Hello!

And it would just be silly to leave a trackback for “Hello!” “Goodbye!”. Then again, the other blogger might get a kick out of that ;)

You may trackback my blog with a “Hello” any time you want.

    There’s some good linkbait:

Trackback this post with “hello!” and get free SEO juice!

Heh, might have to try that out ;)
