Is Social Media Interesting Anymore?

The other night I was chatting with someone about new social networks, and I mentioned how boring they are becoming. To my amazement she agreed, social networks are becoming boring. So here is my question: do you think social media is interesting anymore?

The Internet is full of all sorts of fads. Blogging, in a way, is simply a long-term fad, but one of these days it too will disappear or evolve into something completely different (AKA: Web 3.0). The addiction to sites like MySpace and Digg is also a bit of a fad, and I am beginning to wonder if the evolution of social media will halt sometime soon.

Take MySpace for example. I know a ton of people who were MySpace addicts, they loved it, then about a year ago they got sick of it. Now it seems like everyone I talk to despises the thing. That makes me curious, because they never release real figures about how many active users they have. They have 100+ million registered users, but I bet there are way less than 30 million active users.

Same thing with Digg, 1 million users but I bet a small percentage are active. Most of them are probably people who stop by to leave a comment then never come back.

I am in no way predicting the death of social media sites, I am simply saying I doubt the current juggernauts will be able to grow much more. They are becoming incredibly boring, and pretty soon people will realize there are much better things do to with their free time.

Even worse, there haven’t many creative social media sites popping up either. It is all just starting to become rather boring.

Please subscribe, or else I will cry. Do you really want to make a programmer cry?

I haven’t really gotten into any of them. I use them more to drop a link than anything. :P
