2 More Reasons To Backup Your Blog

Having backups of your blog is obviously helpful if you need to put all of your data back on your server for whatever reason, but there are some other good reasons to keep some snapshots of your data. Here are two more reasons why you should backup your blog.

Copyright Infringement

Have you ever been wrongfully accused of copyright infringement? I have. A few weeks ago some idiot threatened me with a lawsuit and claimed I stole his article. I asked if I could see his “version” of it, he sent me it, and the date on his was 4 weeks after I wrote my article.

So how did I prove I wrote it first? Backups of course. I took a screenshot of a 500+ megabyte folder on my computer that is filled with database backups, e-mailed it to the guy, and he has left me alone since.

It isn’t bulletproof evidence, but if he did sue me I could easily get out of the lawsuit (and I would most likely collect lawyer’s fees from him) simply because I have overwhelming evidence I wrote it first. He has a single post, I have multiple backups from before his post was written.

Site Mirror

My main computer, an iBook G4, is currently running Apache and has some “mirrors” of my websites set up for testing purposes. If I type in “nsni.localhost” it goes to my local testing page for Nusuni.com, which is very handy indeed. This is really nice when I go on a vacation somewhere and don’t have constant Internet access, because I can test out new layouts, plugins, etc all on my computer :) .

I use the backups to simply make my local MySQL database more up to date.

Please subscribe, or else I will cry. Do you really want to make a programmer cry?
