Annoying Registrar Scams (Errr Rip-Offs) That Are Sent Via Snail Mail

A few days ago I received one of those “your domain is about to expire, by renewing with us you will pay much less than with your current registrar” type letters. When I renew this domain, I only do it for a year at a time (although I am thinking of switching to a multi-year period), so I get these letters every year from absolute nobody registrars trying to get my business.

This one has to be one of the biggest rip-offs I have ever seen. I scanned the letter and took out some sections to show you what I mean. Below is the beginning of the letter.

Domain Rip Off

Oh, thank you for telling me that my domain will be expiring. Yes, because if they did an ounce of research they could have realized that I know how to check if my domain will be auto renewed soon.

Before I show you what the prices are, I want to show you all the pretty fine print on the back.

Domain Rip Off 3

Look at how small the print is. I swear I saw something in all that gobbledygook that said, “You shall sell your soul to us.”

And finally, here are the wonderful prices they are offering me.

Domain Rip Off 2

Wonderful prices. For comparison my current registrar for this site charges $10, my other sites use a different registrar that costs $8.50. Wow, $25, what a rip-off. You know, if this company stopped spamming domain name owners with these letters they may be able to charge less.

5 years for $85. Oh my God. I just can’t stop laughing at these morons.

The really pathetic thing is, I did a bit of research into the company that sent me the letter, and it is the same one that has sent me them in years past. However, they apparently change their name each year. Is it just me or does that scream “Registrar Scam”? Even better, they are not listed as an official registrar.

By the way - if you are wondering why I don’t list its name on here, it’s because I’d rather not get sued from some nobody company for defaming them… even though they deserve it.

Please subscribe, or else I will cry. Do you really want to make a programmer cry?
