The Sad Truth About Professional Blogging

Professional blogging is a seriously misunderstood career. Many new bloggers think it is a get rich quick scheme, but they couldn’t be further from the truth. Here is a quick list on why professional blogging is not for everyone.

  1. Most professional bloggers work 8 to 13 hour days - especially when they are first starting out.
  2. Many pro bloggers own 10+ blogs.
  3. Traveling around the world can become a common occurrence in your life.
  4. Money does not come in for years for some bloggers.
  5. Technology blogs, including SEO and blogging blogs, are the hardest types of blogs to get popular nowadays. Why? Because they are so common.
  6. Blogging is not the only part of a pro blogger’s life, most of the time (80%+) they are researching new ideas and checking their RSS feeds and e-mail.
  7. Professional bloggers often have regular jobs as well.
  8. You have to be very social on the Internet to succeed. Search engines may find your site, but it is up to you to get humans to link to it.
  9. If you run a good blog, you must always be ready for the day when an entry font-pages Digg and Reddit
  10. You must have a basic understanding of the copyright and trademark laws.
  11. You have to market your blog like crazy in the beginning, this doesn’t always mean paying for PPC ads.
  12. Most pro bloggers own an LLC or a corporation. By doing so they are protecting their personal assets for the “just in case” scenario, and it may be easier to get tax breaks.
  13. You will probably wind up paying a tax man to handle all that stuff for you.
  14. Backup plans are a must-have.
  15. Family is important - you must be able to balance your blogging career as well as your life.
  16. Exercising is important, remember not to sit on your butt all day.
  17. Most people who call themselves “pro bloggers” are full of crap - most of them barely make $1 a day from the Internet.
  18. The true professional bloggers are much smarter than 99.9% of the population.
