Quick Tip: Are Keyword Domains Worth It?

Short answer: No.

Keyword domains are out, branding is in. Nobody wants to visit “free-computer-access-guide,” instead they want “guidesRus.” Back in the 90s many search engines would rank websites higher if they had certain keywords in their domain name. Nowadays, however, I have yet to see any proof that they still do that.

For starters, I highly doubt Google and the other major SEs give extra “points” to keyword domains, I tend to believe the actual domain and file/directory names are equal. So basically, I think “free-computer-access-guide.TLD” is the same as “example.TLD/free-computer-access-guide”, as far as SEO goes. My beliefs stem from the lack of proof that keyword domains are the best for SEO.

I also believe search engines will detect keyword stuffing in the domain name/file names and will punish the site’s rankings if it needs to.

Plus, how often do you see keyword domains with top 10 rankings on search engines anymore? If you had the Internet back in the 90s then you know how common it was to see the first 10+ results be nothing but keyword domains.
