Good techniques:
- Submit your site to Google — obvious, but many people forget this step
- Use Google Sitemaps
- Get linked to by a highly-ranked site
- Submit your site to some directories
- Write a good article and submit it to sites like Digg
- Write press-releases/articles with your URL in them
- Comment on a high page-ranked site and use your URL in the URL field
- Use trackbacks
- Befriend someone who works at Google
Bad techniques:
- Start a spam blog on a free service like blogger and link over to your new site
- Submit your site to Google 500 times per day
- Spam-comment other blogs
- Write something extremely controversial so everybody links to it, thus getting you traffic and links (controversial people suck)
- Bribe a Google employee
Using Google Sitemaps and manually submitting your site to Google are by-far the best ways to ensure a quick indexing of your site.
